Background of the Study
Local councils play a pivotal role in community development, particularly in advancing educational initiatives. In Eket, local councils have increasingly taken proactive measures to promote girl-child education. Recognizing education as a key driver of socio-economic development, these councils have initiated policies and programs aimed at increasing enrollment, reducing dropout rates, and ensuring a safe learning environment for girls (Ibekwe, 2023). The efforts include infrastructure development, scholarship programs, and community sensitization campaigns that address cultural barriers to female education (Ndukwe, 2024). Recent research suggests that local government interventions are crucial for overcoming socio-cultural challenges and promoting gender equality in education (Akinyemi, 2025). The historical neglect of girl-child education in some communities has gradually been addressed through targeted programs by local councils. Despite these efforts, challenges such as inadequate funding, entrenched cultural practices, and logistical constraints persist, necessitating continuous evaluation and policy adaptation. This study will explore the role of local councils in transforming the educational landscape for girls in Eket. It will examine the strategies implemented, assess their effectiveness, and identify areas for further improvement. By contextualizing the initiatives within broader educational reforms and community dynamics, the research seeks to offer recommendations that can strengthen girl-child education and foster sustainable development (Okon, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Although local councils in Eket have implemented programs to promote girl-child education, several challenges still hinder their full success. Inadequate infrastructure, limited financial resources, and persistent cultural barriers have contributed to low enrollment and high dropout rates among girls (Udo, 2023). Additionally, there is often a lack of coordination between local government initiatives and community stakeholders, which further impedes progress. The gap between policy intentions and actual outcomes raises concerns about the sustainability of current interventions. Without effective strategies to overcome these challenges, the goal of achieving universal girl-child education may remain elusive. This study seeks to identify the key factors undermining the success of local council initiatives and to propose evidence-based strategies to enhance their impact. By addressing these issues, the research aims to contribute to the development of more inclusive and effective educational policies in Eket (Chukwu, 2024).
